ipad rope drawingThis digital drawing is made up of a series of marks of varying opacity and strength. It is projected onto a wall and measures two metres by 1.5metres so is human in scale. There is a sense of depth created by the layering of marks. The background is more vague or ambiguous and dark, the focus of attention is the centre or core of the image. It seems to have an internal energy and there is a strong sense of movement.

The source for the drawing is a collection of rope lodged between rocks which I have been returning to, the drawing was made immediately whilst I was perched on the rocks, buffeted by wind. Although the rope was static, the movement in the drawing suggests the energy involved in the making of this entangled form and the external forces which acted upon it; this is reflected in the quick, gestural marks. There is a tension here between abstraction and figuration. The drawing itself seems to be in flux, and somehow suspended, there is no clear background anchoring it. The colour is pared down with an injection of lurid orange and turquoise adding punch to it. The translucent and scrawling quality of the digital drawing is reminiscent of graffiti.

We were also asked to choose a quote which might open up a different way of looking at your image, this is the one that I chose:

‘One stormy day at Farnley’ says Mr Fawkes, ‘Turner called to me loudly from the doorway, “Hawkey! Hawkey! Come here! Come here! Look at this thunderstorm. Isn’t it grand? – isn’t it wonderful? – isn’t it sublime?”

All this time he was making notes of its form and colour on the back of a letter. I proposed some better drawing-block, but he did it did very well. He was absorbed – he was entranced’
